KeymasterI am looking for a complete set of controls for a Johnson/Evinrude 8 HP series 1991-1999. I am not finding the control kit (5000521) in stock anywhere, but I might be able to put it together piece at a time ($$$!). I am seeing a few of the Ship Master, Simplex and Uflex control boxes available, but there are not bargains here, either. Can someone explain the differences and preference? Cables seem to be available, but it is a little confusing because of all the variables- brand, adapters to control boxes, engine, etc. Also, what length is optimal? I am guessing that 7′ is about right, but I would rather not be guessing right now.

ParticipantRick:
I use both antique OMC and new Uflex boxes. Either works fine with cables set up for OMC ends. The Uflex box has an OMC kit, to match those cables. The boxes and cables are all the same for all 6 and 8hp OMCs. The differences are in the attachments at the motor. On your ’91-’99 they are inside the cover.
I have 6’cables, which are the shortest I found stock, but would suggest shorter if you can find them the 6 foot ones bow up or have to be stuffed inside the boat in S curve. I think 5 feet would be better but haven’t tried them,

KeymasterThanks, Charlie
If you were to follow the uflex measuring instructions, they would recommend an 8′ cable by the time they add three feet extra. Now I understand why so many boats have a spring trap flying in the air behind them!
From my research so far, I would need a Uflex C14x06 for a 6′ cable, a K23 kit and a B49 or B47 box. There is a 5′ cable available, but the tape measure says it might be a little tight. It is good to know a 6′ will work. If anyone is using a 5′ I would be interested to hear.
I would also like to hear the pros and cons between a new uflex control box, the rectangular OMC Simplex and OMC ShipMaster (are they the same thing?) and the older more rounded models OMC. I have heard that the OMC are much more durable than the Uflex, but an old beat up control box does not look as nice as a shiny new one.
