Beautiful Weekend of Sunshine, Warm Weather & Cocktail Class Racing
A beautiful weekend of sunshine and warm weather on Lake Apthorp allowed a few AOF hydroplane racers and our Cocktail Class Racers to have lots of fun on the water amidst sweet-smelling orange groves! Seven CCRs were raced by 10 drivers in 3 official races – plus lots of demo rides and informal racing all weekend. The lake was wonderful, an ambulance and volunteer crew were there both days, and the AOF drivers were friendly and helpful. And when all the outboards were off, we could hear the race cars at nearby Sebring Raceway.
Members from WA, IL, PA, MD, VA, GA, and various parts of Florida came to the races. Stephen Bent (#56, Dark & Stormy) was the quickest around the course in the 6-HP Open class, winning at his first official CCWBRA regatta. Deb Loveys also won at her first regatta, in the Women’s class, driving Jack Pettigrew’s #82 Havin’ Fun. Don and Margaret Johnson both participated in races, each placing 2nd in their respective classes (6-HP Classic and Women’s). A few Smyrna Yacht Club members (from New Smyrna Beach, FL) took the CCRs for demo rides, which reinforced their enthusiasm to finish their boats and host a race in August!
