Andy, let us know here how it goes with that control box and the Tohatsu motor.  While we’re committed to the Tohatsu control because that’s what I thought we needed, and we already have it, we also have an Ultraflex box purchased along with the boat kit.

We finally got the 6hp Tohatsu and accessories at Backyard Boats in Woodbridge (Virginia) and will be installing the hardware in #150 next month.

My understanding from what I’ve read on this forum is that you have to use the Tohatsu control.

The CCWBRA group purchase package for the Tohatsu motor includes a control box, 2 cables, and a remote conversion kit.

I got a call from Backyard Boats in Woodbridge yesterday.   The motor arrived two days ago, so apparently a batch of them has been sent to the US.

Here’s another question for those of you with these motors:  What should the wedge angle be, at least to start out?  If the motor even needs a wedge?

Also, would anyone care to address how to secure the motor against going to the bottom if it comes loose?  Unfortunately, my boat partner and I are total novices to outboard motors.

Rick and Stephen, thanks for the suggestions.  I’ll see what we can do to reinforce the transom before we hang the Tohatsu on it.

After yet another lack of a promised response from Annapolis Inflatables, and no response at all from another dealer I visited in person, I went to Backyard Boats in Woodbridge, Virginia yesterday and put $500 down on the Tohatsu package.  No discount, of course, but they were willing to work with me and actually order everything.

The motor is back-ordered until sometime in December.  Apparently there are currently 144 of them back-ordered in the United States.  I hope that we’ll have everything by January so we can get #150 in the water in spring 2021.

I’ll report my experience here when parts arrive.

Glad to hear it.  They’re good people to deal with.  Good luck with your boat!

PS  Above assumes that the frame section is removable at this point and that you’re building a CLC kit.  A combination of epoxy and 3/4 x 3/4 strips on all sides might do the job, and some stainless steel screws might be useful in that process.

I’m not clear from the picture where you are in the building process, what the big sheet of plywood on the bottom is, or how you broke the frame section, although the BFH in the foreground provides a clue to that.

Not sure when you posted this–the forum has technical problems–but the first thing I’d do is contact CLC for suggestions, or maybe they can cut a new part for you.

Another suggestion: Use the current part as a pattern and cut a new one yourself. But call CLC first, they’re very knowledgeable and helpful.

Has anyone else had trouble procuring the Tohatsu motor package?

We’ve had multiple contacts with Annapolis Inflatables over about two years, via phone, e-mail, and in-person, and they’ve never (to our knowledge) had the entire CCWBRA package. It’s usually a few excuses and a promise to contact us as soon as they have it, which never happens.

I’ve inquired of two other Tohatsu vendors, one by e-mail and in-person, and one only by e-mail, and neither of them has replied. I’m going to pay the latter dealer a visit later this week to see what happens.

If anyone knows of a vendor in the Mid-Atlantic area who actually wants to sell the motor and accessories, please reply.

We’ve finished construction of our boat, but we’re concerned about the strength of the transom brace and wonder what other owners have done to reinforce it.

Unfortunately, this occurred to us after the fat epoxy fillets were applied to the brace, so there’s no room to install hefty metal angles as some of you have done.  Any ideas for that, short of grinding out the fillets?

Also, Jeff Weeber, could you describe your solution with the 0.25 inch aluminum plate on back? Will that prevent separation of the transom brace, or does it serve a different purpose?  We can easily install a 12 x 12 inch plate on back if it would help.

Sorry, I am unable to post anything with images in it.

Update:  Transom handles and drain cocks have been installed, and deck and cockpit got their first two coats of varnish.

I just spent an hour uploading a detailed description and four photographs, but the CAPTCHA thing didn’t like my answer and vaporized the post. When I get over being annoyed about that, I’ll try it again.

An update that we still intend to finish this boat, but given what’s been going on and my pending move from Baltimore to Fredericksburg, Virginia (an unpleasant 100-mile drive down I95, except right now during the pandemic), I’m not sure when we’ll get back to work on it.

Nevertheless, the project is not abandoned, and we will eventually finish it.  It’s about 85-90% completed at this time.
