Long-Distance Competitors Return Home with 3 First Place Awards!
The 2014 Union Lake Regatta was another fun and safe CCWBRA event. Frank Stauss, Race Director, made sure the weather was picture perfect: mid-80’s temps with a slight breeze most of the day. There was a good turn-out with 19 drivers and 15 CCRs. Donna and Mike McNerney were the long-distance competitors, driving up from Florida (they returned with three first place awards!).
Ken Tweed attended his first event of the year but broke his 8’s remote control throttle lever. He then volunteered as Pit Boss for the entire day, with the help of his daughter Kaitlyn. They did an excellent job making sure kill switches were working, kill switch lanyards were tethered to drivers, and that drivers were ready for the next heat to keep the race starts moving quickly.
Two separate courses were set up: an oval course for the 8s, which surrounded a smaller Rock Hall-like course (two hair pin turns) for the 6s. The 8s raced first, followed by the Classics, then, after lunch, the newer 6s. After the awards ceremony finished there were many coached laps and race starts by Youth Class drivers.
Although there were no flips during the day’s racing, there was one bump in a turn. Both drivers reported the event, not seen by anyone else, even though it cost them the first and third place wins. Frank acknowledged their good sportsmanship durnig the awards ceremony.
Great job by Frank and all the drivers and volunteers (both new and veteran) on a very enjoyable day! Final Standings may be viewed here and photos from the day’s events may be viewed here.
